Mute tabs in Chrome by Bas Wijdenes

Chrome, tabs, and disturbing sounds.

If you are like me, you open dozens of tabs in Google Chrome within 5 minutes.

Some websites have an automatic pop-up advertisement video that often starts loading after 10 to 20 seconds.

Usually the sound is loud and that is very disturbing. And then it is often difficult to find the video on the page itself. You’d rather mute the tabs in Chrome then.

Fortunately, you can already see for a while what tab the sound is coming from in Google Chrome. There is a loudspeaker in the tab when it’s playing the sound.

See the screenshot below:

In chrome://flags are the Experimental Features. In the Experimental features there is also an option to mute sounds from tabs in Chrome.

Let’s mute tabs in Chrome.

Go to Chrome://flags/#enable-tab-audio-muting

If you use the link you go directly to the option Tab Audio Muting UI Control. If you set it to enabled, you will be able to mutate tabs in Chrome.

Click on Disabled and set it to Enabled.

A Pop-up will now appear at the bottom of the screen.

“Your changes will take effect the next time you relaunch Google Chrome. RELAUNCH NOW”

You can choose to restart now or do this later. It will only take effect when Google Chrome is restarted.

After you restart Google Chrome, the loudspeaker you see in the tab will be clickable when it plays sound. From now on you can switch off the sound by clicking on the loudspeaker. See the screenshot:

What are all these Experimental Features?

Experimental features are features that are still in test phase.
That means that they can break your browser, or that you can enable things that you do not want to be switched on. If you do not understand what an option does, you should not turn it on.
